The Science

Before you buy:
what actually works

Sleep tech is booming. Not all of it is worth your money. These are the four most important things our team has learned after reviewing 200+ products — so you can spend wisely.

Read the Sleep Journal
01

Trackers measure sleep — they do not improve it

The data is only useful if you act on it. A tracker tells you that you are getting poor deep sleep. A sleep coach, CBT-I programme, or environment change actually fixes it. Use trackers as diagnostic tools, not goals in themselves.

02

Sound consistency beats sound type

Whether you use white, pink, or brown noise, consistency is what matters. Your brain learns to associate the sound with sleep after 3 to 5 nights. The best sound machine is the one you will actually keep using every single night.

03

Temperature is the most underused lever

Your core body temperature needs to drop 1 to 2 degrees Celsius to initiate sleep. A cooling mattress pad can make a bigger difference than any supplement or app. For hot sleepers this is the single highest-ROI investment you can make.

04

Sunrise alarms genuinely work — here is why

Waking to sudden sound spikes cortisol sharply. A gradual light increase mimics dawn, gently raising cortisol over 20 to 30 minutes. You wake in a lighter sleep stage, feel alert faster, and have measurably better morning mood and cognitive performance.

Sleep Trackers +100% deep sleep
★★★★★

The Oura Ring showed me I was only getting 45 minutes of deep sleep a night. Changed two things my coach suggested and now I am averaging 90 plus minutes. I had no idea it was that bad before.

Karan M. — Bangalore
Sound & Audio Zero night wake-ups
★★★★★

The LectroFan is the single best Rs. 7,500 I have ever spent. My partner snores and I was waking 4 to 6 times every single night. Now I sleep through completely. Should have done this years ago.

Deepa R. — Mumbai
Smart Devices Insomnia resolved
★★★★★

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 felt absurd to spend on. But after chronic insomnia for three years, sleeping at exactly 18 degrees finally fixed it. Temperature was everything and I never knew.

Common Questions

Sleep tech FAQs

Honest answers to the questions we get asked most about sleep trackers, sound machines, light therapy, and smart sleep devices.

Read Sleep Journal
Consumer sleep trackers are reasonably accurate for total sleep time and broad sleep stages, but not as precise as clinical polysomnography. They are excellent for spotting trends and relative changes week on week. The Oura Ring and Withings Analyzer perform best in independent accuracy studies.
Wearables such as rings and watches typically give more complete data including heart rate, HRV, SpO2 and temperature. Under-mattress sensors are less intrusive and ideal if you dislike wearing anything to bed. For most people, wearable data is richer and more actionable over time.
Possibly not. But many quieter areas still have intermittent noise such as traffic, plumbing, or a partner. White noise is most valuable for masking these sudden interruptions rather than overall volume. If you share a bed or live in a city it is almost always worth trying.
Evidence is promising but still emerging. Red and near-infrared light in the evening appears to avoid the melatonin-suppressing effects of blue light, and some studies show it can help with sleep quality and circadian rhythm alignment. For those who have addressed the basics it is a worthwhile addition.
A white noise machine gives the best return on investment. The LectroFan Evo at Rs. 7,500 is widely considered the best sleep purchase under Rs. 10,000. If spending more, a quality sleep mask and blackout curtain liner give the next best value before investing in tracking devices.
Ideally not immediately. Some studies show anxiety about sleep scores can worsen sleep quality. Check weekly rather than daily, look for trends rather than individual scores, and never use a single night of data to draw conclusions about your overall health.
